An accident on Highway 10 south of The Pas early Wednesday morning claimed the life of a 59-year-old truck driver.

According to Manitoba RCMP, two semi-trucks collided north of the Highway 10 and Highway 60 junction shortly after midnight April 12. Investigation has determined that a southbound semi, driven by an unidentified 59-year-old man from Truro, N.S., crossed into the wrong lane, where it hit a northbound semi, driven by a 22-year-old man from Assiniboia, Sask.

The driver of the southbound truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The 22-year-old driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Members of The Pas RCMP and a forensic crash deconstructionist are investigating the accident.

Highway 10 remains closed to traffic in both directions as of noon Wednesday, according to Manitoba 511, with a marked closure about 10 kilometres north of the Highway 10 and Highway 60 junction. No detour was in place for several hours following the wreck.

On Wednesday night, traffic was partially reopened on the road, with flaggers and one-way traffic guiding drivers past the accident site. As of noon Thursday, work crews were on the scene cleaning up the accident and the road was open, with reduced speeds near the accident zone.
