If you see a giant Dalmatian standing upright and asking for money tomorrow, don't worry Ñ you're not on Candid Camera. Sparky the Fire Dog, the popular mascot of the Flin Flon Fire Department, will join firefighters on Third Avenue for the Eighth Annual Boot Drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. "The volunteers and Sparky give freely of their time to ensure that this worthwhile event is a success every year," commented Fire Chief Jim Petrie, "and with the support of the community, it will be." The volunteers will set up a roadblock near Mike's Ice 'N' Burger Hut from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., asking passing motorists if they would like to make a donation. The coins and bills are collected in a firefighter's boot, hence the term "Boot Drive." Local residents have donated nearly $35,000 to the fundraiser since it began in 1996. One-hundred per cent of the money has gone to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada, which helps care for two clients in Flin Flon, one in Snow Lake, three in The Pas and three in Thompson.
