Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Ruth Betts Community School held its first Drama Club production as students from grades 4 to 8 performed Holka Polka: A Fairytale Mystery. Witches of past fairytales worked hard at restoring their reputation in Fairtytale Land as they worked together to wake up The Prince. The students performed Holka Polka on stage in the school's gymnasium for two performances. Opening night was Tuesday, June 12 with a second show the next night. Courtney Lycan, a mentor at RBCS, developed the Drama Club after seeing there was nothing like it in place. 'I really enjoyed (drama) in school,' said Lycan, who graduated from Creighton Community School in 2009. 'Getting to know the kids here and (with them) all wanting to be in the spotlight,' Lycan says, a Drama Club was the perfect idea. The mentor found the script for Holka Polka online with no cost to the school. 'I chose that one because it allowed for a lot of students to act in it,' she said. Lycan even added a few parts so those who auditioned could be a part of the show. As a first-time Director, Lycan says it was 'stressful, but good in the end.' Expectations were surpassed as the students memorized their lines, performed well, and had fun. 'It was better than I expected,' Lycan said. In total, 20 actors took part in Holka Polka and started work in March. As the mentor placements are only a year long in the Flin Flon School Division, Lycan won't be at RBCS next year. But she says the students have already asked for the Drama Club to continue next year, and she's hopeful that will happen. 'The kids want to keep it going,' she said. Along with Lycan, Meredith Lloyd and Cindy Klippel helped the production run smoothly.
