Picking up and dropping off passengers is about to get a lot more convenient for drivers in downtown Flin Flon.
City council is poised to reserve three parking spots on Main Street specifically for these quick stops.
“I would welcome that very much,” said Lorne Moorhead, a volunteer driver for the Lions Handivan.
Moorhead said it is often difficult to find a place on Main Street to drop off wheelchair-bound passengers.
Sometimes there is no choice but to double park and hold up other traffic, he said, to let Handivan users can reach their chosen destination.
The three pick-up/drop-off spots are to be located:
• on the east side of Main Street between Ginnell Bauman Watt Law Corp. and Instaloans;
• on the west side of Main Street near the Steel Centre union hall; and
• on the east side of Main Street in front of Pioneer Square and Subway.
Benefits
Though anyone will be able to use the spots, Coun. Skip Martin pointed out the benefits for the Handivan.
“It’ll assure the Handivan three spots on Main Street that will be open because even though there [are] handicapped parking zones on Main Street, they [won’t] necessarily be open,” said Martin, who made a motion to reserve the spots at last week’s council meeting. “Somebody [else could] park there, and park there for a couple of hours.”
Martin’s motion carried initial reading with no opposition. It is expected to become law as early as council’s next regular meeting on Sept. 16.
Moorhead, who drives the Handivan for one out of every five weeks, said most of his passengers visiting Main Street have hair or eye appointments.
In another change, council has also approved initial reading of a bylaw to relocate the handicapped parking spot near Crepes N Grapes across the street so it is near Northern Rainbow’s End.
