Creighton's Helen Hunter is taking her campaign to enhance local care for Alzheimer's patients to the doorsteps of residents. She has been going door-to-door in Creighton this week to collect donations for her non-profit organization, Mitkas-Hunter Hope Foundation Inc., the goal of which is to build a special care facility for people suffering from the degenerative disease. "I've gotten a very good response so far," said Hunter. "The majority of people have made a donation." She began canvassing in Creighton this past Saturday. Her last day will be this Saturday, October 4. As she goes door-to-door, Hunter will try to find potential volunteers for her foundation. Meanwhile, Trina Senyk, a board member with Hunter's foundation, plans to canvass in Denare Beach from October 2-9. Hunter and other volunteers will also hold a tag day on October 10. Anyone wishing to assist with that fundraiser or any others may contact her at 688-8080 or [email protected] She said the NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority and the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba are supporting her foundation and its ultimate goal. Hunter's father, Alzheimer's patient Miros Mitkas, was transferred to from the North to Selkirk last year because the long-term special care he requires is not available in this region. The LPN has already obtained a design guideline for the care unit that her foundation will attempt to construct. The one-storey facility would include 10 bedrooms, a dining area and kitchen, a living room, a foyer and a meeting room. Hunter would also like to see walking areas inside and outside of the facility. If construction is completed, Hunter hopes to work with the government to fund the necessary staff for the facility. Anyone wishing to make a donation to Mitkas-Hunter Hope Foundation Inc. may send their donation to: Mitkas-Hunter Hope Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 809, Creighton, Sask., S0P 0A0.
