Violence against anyone is unacceptable. However, violence experienced by women ? particularly intimate partner violence and sexual assault ? represents a unique aspect of the wider social problem of violence, and requires specific attention and solutions. The Women's Resource Centre is submitting weekly stories this month to create greater public awareness of this complex problem. We hope these reinforce the fact that sexual violence and family violence are UNACCEPTABLE in a civilized society. My name is Date Rape Since November is Domestic Violence Prevention Month, I thought I would introduce myself to the community. The reason for this is because most people can't tell who I am, as I wear many different faces. I show up at parties. I watch for the person who is drinking fast or doing drugs. I also can spot a first timer. I pretend to be a nice person, Oh yea, I am really good at it. I slide over to my date or should I say my prey. I introduce myself with charm and charisma. I see you're feeling ill. I offer to drive you home, or I know where there is a bedroom and you should lie down. You stumble with me up the stairs and now I come alive ? I'm your worst nightmare. "No" means nothing to me, I know you want it, at least that's what I tell myself. Who will believe you? You're drunk, stoned, I will tell them you asked for it. I have friends and they'll cover for me. What are you going to do about it? Help is available Date Rape is a crime. This will be taken seriously. If you or any one you know has suffered this type of sexual violation I want you to know that there is help out there. The first thing you must do is tell someone you trust. If they do nothing, then find someone else to tell. It was not your Fault.
