Do you know a young person who stands out among the crowd? If so, nominations are now open for the Healthy Youth Role Model Award. 'It's not always the easy or the popular choice (for youth) to make healthy choices, so we want to really recognize those in our community who are role models for others,' said Tiffany Ealey, an addictions counsellor with the CADAC Centre, one of the award's sponsors. Nominees for the award must meet the following criteria: between the ages of 15 and 19; not using alcohol or drugs; a resident of Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach or Cranberry Portage area; Êattending school; and Êinvolved in extracurricular activities in both their school and community. The award is sponsored by the CADAC Centre, the Flin Flon Community Youth Resource Centre, the Flin Flon-Creighton National Addictions Awareness Week Committee and the local FASD Committee. The award has been handed out annually since 2002. It includes a cash prize, gift package and personalized plaque for the winner. The recipient's school also receives a traveling plaque, featuring the names of all past and present winners, to display for a year. Over the past 11 years, each area high school _ Hapnot Collegiate, Creighton Community School, Many Faces Education Centre and Cranberry Portage's Frontier Collegiate _ has had at least one student accept the award. Nominations for the Health Youth Role Model Award will close on Nov. 1. For more information, phone the CADAC Centre at 306-688-8291. The award will be presented at some point during National Addictions Awareness Week, which runs from Nov. 17-23 and includes various local initiatives. Last year's award recipient was Melissa Wasylciw, then a Grade 12 student at Hapnot.
