MTS has again delayed plans to bring digital cellular phone service to Flin Flon. The upgrade was originally scheduled to be in place in the end of June, but the date was later bumped to Sept. 30. Now the corporation says it will likely be "a few more weeks" beyond the end of September. The delays came because MTS found a superior (though undisclosed) location to place the digital equipment necessary for the upgrade. Switching locations has added time to the project, but the company feels it will be worth the wait. "It's going to be a great service once it's there," said Michelle Bailey-Picard, MTS spokesperson. Aside from a clearer signal, the upgraded service will allow residents to use newer cell phone features like text messaging and camera phones, which are increasing in popularity. MTS brought digital cell coverage to Thompson in March and The Pas in June. The cost of bringing the service to those communities and Flin Flon will total about $625,000. Features available to digital cellular customers include the MobileBrowser, which allows users to browse the Internet from a cell phone. Also available is the Two-Way Short Message Service, allowing users to send and receive text messages; and Data to Go solutions, which allows users to connect their cell phone to a laptop to access the Internet. As well, the new service allows use of Picture Messaging service when using a camera phone.9/24/2004
