Diagnostic funds welcome

Flin Flon has shared in an investment of nearly $12 million for new diagnostic equipment for Manitoba hospitals.

Flin Flon has shared in an investment of nearly $12 million for new diagnostic equipment for Manitoba hospitals.

In the fall of 2013, the province invested $231,000 to renovate and install new equipment in the x-ray room at the Flin Flon General Hospital.

“The new equipment replaces equipment from 1989 and enhances patient safety by issuing low-dose radiation,” said a provincial spokesperson.

“In addition, images can now be sent digitally directly to the physician, rather than using wet-film processing. The new room is also more ergonomic for patients with mobility issues.”

The work and x-ray equipment was part of an $11.9-million investment in new diagnostic equipment formally unveiled by Health Minister Erin Selby this week.

“Modernizing health equipment is a priority to ensure that health-care facilities continue to offer the best possible care to Manitoba’s families for years to come,” said Selby in a news release. “By replacing old technology, we can make our diagnostic services even better.”

Among the other communities benefitting from the investment are Swan River and Dauphin, both of which are receiving new computed radiography equipment to enhance their x-ray machines.

“Diagnostic Services Manitoba is proud to offer imaging services to Manitoba’s rural communities,” said Jim Slater, CEO of the organization, in the release. “The equipment upgrades allow us to continue providing safe, quality results that matter to patients and their physicians to help diagnose and treat health concerns.”

Over the last 15 years, the Manitoba government has invested more than $145 in new and replacement diagnostic equipment and services across the province.
