Diabetes is a leading cause of death by disease in Canada. Within the NOR-MAN region, diabetes is an important health problem among residents. According to 1995 statistics, the NOR-MAN region had the third highest incidence and prevalence rate for diabetes in Manitoba. Careful management plays a key role in living a healthy life with diabetes. If diabetes is left untreated or improperly managed, the high levels of blood sugar associated with diabetes can slowly damage both the small and large blood vessels in the body, resulting in a variety of complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, limb amputation and erectile dysfunction. The good news is that with careful management, these complications can be delayed or even prevented. Today, people with diabetes can live active, independent and vital lives, if they make a commitment to careful management of the disease. Diabetes is managed in several ways, including: Education: individuals with diabetes need to educate themselves on the disease in order to make healthy lifestyle choices and to help them better manage the disease. Nutrition: what, when and how much you eat plays an important role in regulating blood sugar levels. Exercise: regular exercise helps lower your blood sugar levels, promotes weight loss, reduces stress and enhances over all wellness. Healthy Weight: maintaining a healthy weight is very important, especially in the control of type 2 diabetes. Medication: Type 1 diabetes requires daily injections of insulin. Type 2 diabetes is controlled through exercise and meal planning and may require medications and/or insulin. Lifestyle Management: healthier lifestyle choices include reducing stress, quitting smoking, taking care of your feet, having a yearly eye and teeth check-up and controlling high blood pressure.
