Derelict vehicles in Flin Flon: insurance means compliance

A Flin Flon man ordered to comply with a derelict-vehicle bylaw can keep his autos as long as he buys storage insurance.

A Flin Flon man ordered to comply with a derelict-vehicle bylaw can keep his autos as long as he buys storage insurance.

Dan Trojan learned about that option after appearing before city council to express concerns over a bylaw enforcement letter he received about his property.

Trojan told council on Tuesday, August 4 that he works every day and can’t comply with an order relating to vehicles on his property.

Referencing past incidents involving derelict vehicles, Coun. Ken Pawlachuk said once people buy storage insurance on a vehicle, it is no longer considered derelict.

“We’ve had other people that have more than two vehicles, they have 15 vehicles in their yard, and when we went to deal with it, they put storage insurance on all of them and then they still have them,” he said.

But Mayor Cal Huntley said that’s not the approach the city favours.

“We don’t encourage that, because the idea is if you’ve got a yard full of vehicles, that’s not what the yard is for,” he said, adding that he did not know the specifics of Trojan’s case.

Huntley encouraged Trojan to contact city management to discuss the letter, and pointed out that municipal employees are only following the direction set by the city.
