The Northern Village of Denare Beach has tabled a balanced budget that increases spending and the base tax, but not the mill rate.
In its latest budget, approved earlier this year, village council projects $1.87 million in spending in 2016.
That’s down from the $2.02 million budgeted in 2015, but up 11 per cent from the $1.68 million actually spent last year.
The new budget holds the line on the residential and commercial tax rate. The base property tax – applied to the village’s most modest homes – goes up by $50 for a total of $600.
The village expects to generate a quarter of revenue from taxes. The rest of the the income will come from sources such as utilities, fees and charges, and conditional grants.
Due to the nature of its funding arrangements, the village again plans to spend more on fire protection than on police protection.
Fire protection is projected to cost $79,200 compared to $17,500 for police protection. Denare Beach is served by the Creighton RCMP detachment.
