No one was injured when a series of multi-car pile ups took place at the Pineroot Raceway yesterday afternoon. In fact, the drivers wore smiles as big as the Cheshire Cat's as they competed in the 2004 Demolition Derby before some 400 enthusiastic spectators. "They're definitely diehard demo derby fans to come out in this weather," said Laura Spring, one of the organizers, as an unusually chilly August wind fanned. See 'Mud' P.# Con't from P.# Mud flew and smoke billowed as the helmeted drivers played bumper cars in Pineroot's circular dirt pit, each trying to have the last vehicle running. "I like seeing them smash each other," smiled one young boy in the crowd. The derby featured 15 on-their-last-wheels cars adorned with colourful slogans and pictures. One station wagon was garnished with perhaps the ultimate embodiment of masculinity, the Incredible Hulk. Chad Bridgeman was the big winner, taking home $900 and the IAM Local 1848 and Scorpio Bearing and Auto Ltd. Trophy for his victory in the Main Event. Firefighters were on hand to ensure none of the beat-up machines posed a threat, and tow trucks were nearby for drivers who required assistance getting their vehicles out of the pit. Some eye brows were raised when emcee Wayde Lowe announced that Dave Law, the steady-going Flin Flon city councillor, was among the drivers in the Mechanic's Revenge Event.
