2003 December 1 Ð Some good old fashioned holiday cheer brought smiles to a sea of elderly faces at the R.H. Channing Auditorium yesterday. The Rotary Club of Flin Flon and their sister group, the Inner Wheel Club, welcomed about 300 seniors to the 49th Annual Senior citizens Christmas party. December 3 Ð Flin Flon's big box stores have turned a community that was commercially dying into a lively hub filled with optimism, Mayor Dennis Ballard said yesterday as guest speaker at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting in the Friendship Centre. "It's a different community today," he told the crowd of 35 business people. "From what I see, it's a bustling community that' moving ahead." December 5 Ð The Lord's Bounty Food Bank is coming off its busiest year ever and there's no sign that the demand is waning. Over the past two months, usage of the food bank has increased 43 per cent compared to last year, while about 15 new clients have signed up. "Whether this is a temporary thing, I have no idea," said Dennis Hydamaka, food distribution chairperson. December 11 Ð A divided crowd of parents applauded Tuesday when Creighton School Board Chair Terry Brown said the board may postpone a motion to establish a high school program in the community. Tuesday marked the first public forum for parents to discuss with the Creighton board the potential addition of grades 10, 11 and 12 to Creighton Community School. December 15 Ð The second awards night of the year for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting was held Friday at the R.H. Channing Auditorium in the Community Hall. There were 44 more 25-year watch recipients honoured which increased the total to 2,530 men and women who have worked for 25 years or more at HBMS. December 17 Ð The face of education on both sides of the border changed last night when the Creighton School Board voted to establish a high school program at Creighton Community School. In a landmark 4-2 decision, the trustees opted to establish a homegrown high school program for the more than 100 high school students in Creighton and Denare Beach. "It came down to what is best for Creighton Community School," said Terry Brown, board chair. "I am very confident we will offer a great high school education for our kids and that we will have the funding to provide them with whatever we need." December 18 Ð Callinan Mine, formerly the South Main Mine, is entering its 'sunset mode'. The ore hoist, believed to be the only one of its kind in the world still operating, will be completely decommissioned as of tomorrow morning. The man hoist and the red Headframe, which towers between Flin Flon and Creighton, will only be used as a back up system to the modern 777 Mine a few kilometres away along the Perimeter Highway.
