Two Creighton men will stand trial on a charge of possessing a so-called date rape drug for the purpose of trafficking.
The accused, ages 27 and 28, were charged in July 2012 with importing, trafficking and possessing for the purpose of trafficking ketamine.
At a preliminary inquiry, held last week in La Ronge to determine if the charges would stick, the men agreed to stand trial on the charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
They maintain they are not guilty.
The Crown in turn agreed to dismiss all other charges.
The case will now go to the Court of Queen’s Bench in Melfort. As of Monday, no date had been set.
Search Warrant
At the time of the men’s arrest, authorities said 486 grams of the drug, also known as special K, were seized as a result of a search warrant executed in Creighton and an ongoing investigation.
Police said they further confiscated four grams of marijuana, three laptop computers and two cell phones.
RCMP did not release the estimated street value of the ketamine seized.
According to Health Canada, ketamine is a fast-acting anesthetic and painkiller used in human and veterinary surgery. The street drug is usually sold in a powder form.
The drug can induce a sense of detachment. It is among a number of narcotics known as date rape drugs.
