The theme for the Catholic Women's League (CWL) 56th Annual Manitoba Provincial Council Convention, to be held in Flin Flon at St. Ann's Hall Saturday, June 5 and Sunday June 6, 2004 is "Cast Out Into The Deep". What is the point of having such an affair, you may ask? Well, as you may or may not know, the province of Manitoba is divided into three dioceses: 1 - Winnipeg (which actually includes Dauphin, Swan River etc.); 2 - St. Boniface (which actually includes Winnipeg) and; 3 - Keewatin - The Pas, which includes all the North as far south as The Pas and as far North as Lynn Lake. These conventions are like huge business meetings in which Catholic women bring their concerns and resolutions from various parishes throughout the province. Then, from the provincial conventions the resolutions are brought along to the national convention. Often from the national conventions, they may go to government to lobby for laws to be changed. For example, at the 83rd Annual National Convention the following resolutions were brought up: (some actually pushing changes in legislation), namely: - age of consent for sexual activity; - tax deduction for post secondary school textbooks; - national strategy to eliminate computer-based child pornography; - affordable housing for low-income Canadians. The National president, Marie Cameron, as well as the Provincial president Sandra Brynes, will be in attendance. It is recommended that paid CWL members who wish to attend this convention pre-register by May 21, 2004. It is expected that there will be about 100 delegates in attendance.
