Creighton’s share of a provincial revenue sharing grant has declined by almost $120,000.
Creighton town council discussed the news during its July 10 meeting.
During the 2018-19 fiscal year, the town will receive less than $1.1 million from the Northern Municipal Revenue Sharing Grant community allocation. That is down from more than $1.2 million received by the town last year for 2017-18.
The biggest change for the town from last year comes from collectable property taxes, which led to deductions made to overall grant funding. In the upcoming year’s outlook, the town will have a deduction of $689,162 from collectable property taxes this year, up almost $90,000 from last year’s rate.
Funding through the grant is broken down by how the money will be spent. While the town will receive over $5,000 more than last year to cover administrative costs and an extra $3,600 over last year’s funding for landfill expenses, about $38,000 was cut from funding for other community services.
Funds for water and sewer and transportation will remain the same as last year.
Fidler said the grant, which is used to fund multiple community operations and administrative tasks, was expected to decline for this fiscal year, adding that a larger deduction was expected.
“It’s the PST that was collected last year and the year before. The amount shared goes on that. It went down,” said Fidler.
“That was six per cent, but per the discussions and stuff like that, part of that was deferred. Our decrease for the north wasn’t as bad as it could have been.”
