The Saskatchewan Government Employees Union says some 600 provincial government jobs will disappear over the next year. Responding to the new provincial budget, unveiled Wednesday, SGEU said cuts to public service workers will hurt communities as front-line services are eroded. The union said government ministries will be forced to contract out work that still needs to be done _ but at a higher cost to taxpayers. The job cuts are to be carried out throughout the 2013-14 fiscal year, and no layoff notices have been issued at this point, according to the union. 'Government's operating expenses have increased by 10 per cent every year for the past three years _ even though it has been cutting jobs by four per cent in each of those years,' said SGEU president Bob Bymoen.
