Cumberland House Cree Nation Chief Lorne Stewart and Cumberland House Mayor Val Deschambeault are assuring residents who were evacuated earlier this week that their homes and belongings are safe and secure. 'Currently there are approximately 110 people on the Island that consist of emergency workers, heavy equipment contractors, medical personnel and security,' Chief Stewart said Wednesday in a media release. 'We would like to reassure community members that security for all homes is being provided around the clock. There are also personnel solely assigned to feeding and dealing with family pets left in the community due to the evacuation.' 'Construction has been underway around the clock since June 23, 2013 with efforts focusing on containing and minimizing flood damage through sandbagging, building dykes and berms to protect homes and community infrastructure,' says Mayor Deschambeault. 'We want to let our people know that the communities are safe and secure.' Food services are being provided at the Charlebois School for all workers currently on site. Pet food is being flown in as needed. The Chief Island Community Store and Northern store have also been providing perishables for animal care. Chief Stewart and Mayor Deschambeault plan to visit all evacuation centres on Monday to brief and update community members. In the meantime, a Facebook Page has been created under the name '2013 Cumberland House Flood Command Center' for view and updates. _ Cumberland House Cree Nation
