Jonathon Naylor Editor The Rotary Club of Flin Flon didn't make any friends in the crustacean community last Saturday evening. But that was a small price to pay as the organization raised thousands of dollars for local enhancement projects with another successful Lobster Fest. A hungry crowd of 400 people packed the R.H. Channing Auditorium, dining on lobsters plucked from a boiling bath as part of an entertainment-filled evening. 'A couple of people said it was the best lobster they ever had,' said Glenn Smith, co-chair along with son Tim. The Rotarians ordered roughly 725 lobsters from Nova Scotia. The clawed crustaceans had been cooked on site before being loaded, along with ice, into styrofoam coolers destined for Flin Flon. Once here, the sea-bred main courses were tossed into tubs of boiling water outside the auditorium entrance before being placed on the plates of eager patrons. Sold out By the end of the night, not a single lobster remained. If seafood wasn't up their dining alley, guests had the option of steak or chicken, complemented by the standard array of side dishes. Smith estimated that 85-90 per cent of the diners ate at least one lobster. A post-dinner social, complete with the musical stylings of The Usual Suspects, a local favourite, rounded out the evening. The final tally is not yet known, but Smith expects the fundraiser to bring in $12,000 for the Rotarians. Smith noted that roughly 55 Rotary volunteers served the crowd in 40 minutes, something he said no private caterer could do because the labour costs would be too great.
