Creighton's remoteness in relation to the rest of the province will exempt the community from major school division amalgamations across Saskatchewan. "The distances are so great that it would cost a fortune for organization and getting people to meetings," said Heather Jacobson, a Creighton School Board trustee. Northern Lights School Division in La Ronge and Ile la Cross School Division in the community of the same name are also exempt from the amalgamations because of their location. Saskatchewan Minister of Learning Andrew Thomson announced last week that the government would establish a task force to recommend new school division boundaries based on a map of no more than 40 school divisions, with no fewer than 5,000 students in each division. Saskatchewan currently has 82 school divisions. Thomson said that all direct savings from the amalgamations will be redirected at the regional and local level into educational services. The amalgamation transition period is to begin this September and last until December 2006.
