The Creighton Sportex is just one topic likely to be covered in the town’s ongoing Community Sustainability Vision survey.
In March 2014, Creighton council announced it would no longer surface ice at the Creighton Sportex. Since then, council has agreed to let the ice stand for the 2014-15 season, but the future of ice at the Sportex will continue to be under review.
Town administrator Paula Muench said council is expecting a lot of comments about the Sportex from the survey.
“I know council wants to keep it recreational,” Muench said. “It’s just how we’re going to best suit all [of] our needs.”
Future growth
In addition to the Sportex’s future, the survey asks the community for input on the town’s direction.
“The Community Sustainability Vision will help guide future growth and development in and around the Town of Creighton over the next five to 10 years,” according to the town’s website. “By sharing your thoughts and ideas, you will inform the vision to reflect the interests, goals and needs of local residents today and for future generations to come.”
Muench said council isn’t forecasting what kind of comments and answers they will receive. “That’s what we’re trying to find out.”
The vision survey has been out for a while, including being available at the CFAR Trade and Leisure Show in May. It will remain open at least until the end of summer – a definite closing date has not yet been announced.
The survey asks what responders like most about their community, what they would like to see change, what they want to stay the same, and how they see the future of community .
“We’d like to see where they would like to see things go,” said Muench. “We want to see the community and their vision for the next 10 years.”
And though she says council isn’t speculating about all the responses the survey will receive, Muench expects to find support for a personal care home among them.
“I know council has been trying for a long time to try and get a personal care home,” she said in an interview earlier this spring.
Muench said there is a “huge need” for a personal care home and expects to see the topic come up frequently.
Another topic likely to make the list will be economic development.
“That’s going to be the big thing we’d like to expand on,” said Muench.
The Town of Creighton has had a development plan in previous years, but this is first vision study it has created. The results will help guide the town’s development decisions for the next five to 10 years.
“It will be interesting to see what some of the comments are and what some of the thoughts are,” Muench said.
Council hopes to find answers for the community through the vision.
Aqua centre
Talk of a wave pool and other aquatic activities have swirled in Creighton over the years, and Muench says the vision will determine if there is a need for it.
In Flin Flon, a feasibility study is underway to make decisions about upgrades to the Flin Flon Aqua Centre. An information session Wednesday determined that residents and Flin Flon city council were interested in keeping the current aqua centre building, upgrading it, and adding revenue-generating features such as a therapeutic pool and a larger deck area.
“If they have an aqua centre there probably isn’t a need for another one,” said Muench. “But we’ll wait and see.”
The Creighton survey will continue for the summer, with results collected and compiled in the following few months.
Area residents are encouraged to fill out the survey, which can be found online at www.townofcreighton.ca or picked up at Creighton town hall. Residents not only of Creighton, but of the surrounding areas as well, are encouraged to participate.
