More inter-community collaboration may be in the cards in the coming months, with two upcoming meetings bringing together local municipal council members from both sides of the border.
At the May 11 Creighton town council meeting, Mayor Bruce Fidler mentioned that representatives from Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach would be meeting later this week for a second tri-council meeting.
“We had one initial meeting to get things underway, just preliminary discussions, and we are going to have another one on May 19,” Fidler said.
When asked about progress so far, Fidler said, “There is a lot of interest between the three communities to work together to try and bring increased economic development to the area.”
Creighton council was also invited to attend a joint council meeting, an annual event hosted by Community Futures Greenstone, also scheduled for Thursday, May 19.
Fidler said it was unlikely he could attend the Greenstone-hosted meeting, but he hoped other members of his council would attend.
Unsightly yards
Council carried a motion to have the town building inspector compile a list of untidy and unsightly properties, and submit them to council for review.
Fidler said council goes through this process on an annual basis.
When asked about council’s options for addressing unsightly properties, Fidler said, “If we have complaints or reports we will get in touch with the homeowner, or send them a letter requesting that they clean up their yard, get it tidied up. We go through that process and the last thing, if it isn’t done, then we can have it done and bill them for it.
“It’s not something we like to do, because we like to have our residents take pride in the area and try and keep their yards tidy.”
“It’s mostly properties rather than homes” that are the issue, said Ald. Don Aasen.
“We have the spring cleanup coming, so people can get everything together and our crew will come along and pick it up,” added Fidler.
Fire ban lifted
Council agreed to lift the fire ban on the community, effective Thursday, May 12, due to changes in weather conditions.
Evacuation plan
Fidler noted the town needed to develop an evacuation plan, as no formal plan is currently in place for the Town of Creighton.
“It’s something that’s been overlooked, we need to address it,” he said.
Fidler said the plan would likely involve the fire department, the RCMP and conversations with other local municipalities, and he hoped to have a draft in place as soon as possible.
Project tenders
Council received two tenders for the Sportex parking lot drainage project. Discussion on the tenders was referred to the transportation committee for review.
The town allotted $50,000 for the project in its 2016 budget.
