At their meeting last week, Creighton town council carried a motion to move regular public skating hours from Sundays to Saturdays on a trial basis as Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District has asked to rent the ice on Sunday afternoons for six weeks for a development clinic.
The recreation committee also noted that ice will be going in to the Sportex on Sept. 28.
Meanwhile, volunteers are needed on Saturday, Oct. 10 to help with Table for One, a Thanksgiving supper open to all area residents.
The Terry Fox Walk will take place in Creighton on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 11:30 am with walkers to be led by the Creighton RCMP
Town maintenance
The transportation, utility services and landfill committee reported at the Sept. 9 meeting on updates from town foreman Bruce Brown on the following projects:
• The addition of a new fire hydrant on Elander Avenue and replacement of two leaking hydrants is pending.
• A culvert and cover was installed at Jason’s Tire and Auto.
• This month, a ditch on a walkway along Nejedly Street will be filled in so pedestrians can walk on the side of the road.
• Culvert replacement is ongoing on all of Nejedly, most of Fourth Avenue, Old Creighton Avenue, Bereskin Avenue and Collins Street.
• A contractor has cleaned the reservoir in the water treatment plant. The town is also continuing to keep an eye on a minor leak at the plant.
• Drainage upgrades for the Sportex parking lot have been rescheduled for 2016. The lot is currently a mix of sand and gravel, explains town administrator Paula Muench, who notes the town is hoping to improve the drainage in the lot to make the area more suitable for paving in the future.
• Clean-up of the drainage ditch at the RCMP station is ongoing: “It is about 50 per cent completed,” says Muench. Council noted the town will bill the RCMP for their portion of the expenses.
Fire report
Fire chief Robert Larocque reported on four incidents in July and August:
• On July 6, alarms were set off at a location on Third Avenue due to burnt toast.
• A malfunctioning pump nozzle caused a gas spill at the Creighton Super Stop on July 18.
• On July 29, firefighters were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 135 but were told to stand down by the time they reached the Granite Lake turnoff.
• On August 13, a grass fire was reported on Hamell Lake. When firefighters arrived, they discovered the fire was on an island and the Department of Natural Resources was called to respond.
Larocque added that both Creighton Fire Department trucks had been re-certified by Rocky Mountain Phoenix and reported to be in excellent condition.
New purchase
Council agreed to purchase a brush chipper at a cost of $31,700 plus taxes.
The transportation, utility services and landfill committee recommended applying through the Northern Capital Grant program for this expenditure.
Muench noted the chipper will mainly be used at the landfill. The machine can chip wood up to 10 inches in diameter, so lumber left over from demolished buildings, or brush from cleared pathways, could be made smaller, helping to extend the life of the landfill.
