The Town of Creighton will be shining a light on its most solemn site.
Town council voted last week to install streetlights by the columbarium and memory wall property.
Mayor Bruce Fidler said council had already been considering the project when a neighbouring resident asked for the lights.
Council will pay SaskPower $5,800 to add a pole equipped with two lights at the columbarium and a second pole with one light on the nearby Nejedly Street hill.
It’s believed the lights are to be installed sometime in January.
Fidler had no concerns the lights will be too bright for neighbours, since it was a neighbour who requested the project.
The columbarium contains niches that store the ashes of departed Creighton residents. The adjacent memory wall bears engraved metal leaves in honour of residents who have been buried elsewhere or not cremated.
In 2012, Creighton developed the site, located at the corner of Elander Avenue and Nejedly Street, in response to public requests.
“For years and years, people have been wanting a cemetery,” Fidler said in early 2012. “People have spent their whole life in Creighton and they want to finish up there. But it’s not feasible for a cemetery and this is where the direction is heading, is towards columbariums. More people are getting cremated these days and this is our best option.”
