Creighton Community School has received a $25,000 grant allowing it to offer multiple sports programs to children in the community.
Creighton School Division trustees discussed the grant, awarded by the RBC Learn to Play Project, at their latest meeting, held Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Some of the activities to be funded by the grant include intramurals, floor hockey in Denare Beach, drop-in basketball evenings and drop-in gym nights.
As part of the grant requirements, in November the school hosted a basketball jamboree for the children and youth of Creighton and Flin Flon.
Recognition
Trustees took time to recognize retiring school counsellor Joe Kowalchuk for his 10 and a half years of service to Creighton Community School.
In addition to providing counselling services to students and staff, Kowalchuk also helped take many students on a range of outdoor education trips.
Formerly employed by the Flin Flon School Division, Kowalchuk joined Creighton Community School as the senior high counsellor in 2005. He retired on Jan. 31.

Ryan Trumbley, physical education coordinator at Creighton Community School, presented his annual report outlining extracurricular programs available to students.
Highlights of the year included the football team winning their second consecutive league championship, the senior boys’ volleyball team going to their second consecutive provincial championship and the senior girls’ basketball team placing in the top eight in the province for the third consecutive year.
Individual accomplishments at the Northeast Saskatchewan Schools Athletic Conference (NESSAC) included Khariaz Kawa’s gold in the quadathalon and the 100 metres; Kenzie Grant’s gold in the hurdles; Tyler Williamson’s gold in the hurdles, 100 metres and 200 metres; Evan Linnick’s gold in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres; and Tyler Kryschuk’s silver in the high jump.
