Creighton School Board meeting highlights, December, 2013:
Physical Education Coordinator’s Report
On Dec. 16, Ryan Trumbley, the physical education coordinator at Creighton Community School, submitted a report to the board.
This report included information on all of the various extra-curricular athletic programs that are available at the school.
Highlights of Trumbley’s report included the increasing number of students that are participating in the school extra-curricular athletics program, and the large number of parent and staff volunteer coaches that are required to provide the extra-curricular athletic program.
Trumbley has also been very active in applying for grants from several organizations to support the extra-curricular athletic program.
This past year grants totaling over $20,000 were received. This additional funding allowed the school to purchase a basketball shooting machine, a volleyball spiking trainer, and new protective matting for the gym walls.
Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation Christmas Feast
On Dec. 12, the staff of Creighton Community School prepared a Christmas feast that was shared with all members of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation at the Denare Beach PBCN band office.
In addition to the wonderful meal that was enjoyed by all, a large teepee was set up outside so that families and teachers could share hot chocolate and smores around a roaring fire.
While it was a very cool evening many children spent the entire evening outside around the campfire.
A parent from Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation commented on the Christmas Feast by saying, “Kids need this as much as parents do, it does help. When I was younger in school I never saw a teacher or principal out here. I think it makes a difference – it helps build more positive relationships. We also have never had our culture so celebrated! Wow, this is awesome, keep up the good work!”
Hoshin Kanri Board Orientation
Acting principal Stacy Lair, and Director of Education Bob Smith, provided the Board with an overview of the draft provincial education plan.
The draft education plan was developed using a strategic planning model referred to as Hoshin Kanri.
Boards of education and representatives of the teaching staff across the province are currently engaged in a process of providing feedback on the draft provincial education plan.
This feedback will be incorporated into the process of plan finalization at an upcoming director’s meeting on Feb. 4-6.
The finalized plan will then be sent to all boards across the province for their approval.
This Hoshin Kanri planning process will be the first time that all boards across the province will develop a provincial education plan and use common strategies to achieve the outcomes of the plan.
