According to the Creighton RCMP’s latest monthly report, residents may want to avoid leaving their vehicle unattended while warming it up.
Two car thefts were shown in the RCMP’s November report, brought to Creighton town council during its Dec. 13 meeting. This included the theft of a vehicle, which was left unattended while it warmed up.
Not long after, the vehicle was discovered in a ditch on Highway 106 between Creighton and the Highway 135 junction.
“We have suspects but we don’t have anything concrete,” said RCMP Sgt. Sean McPhee.
Another vehicle theft was reported to police from Denare Beach. The vehicle, identified as a Smart car, was taken from an area resident. That vehicle was later found burned on the shoulder of Highway 135, not far from Pelican Narrows.
Arrests have not yet been made in either case, but McPhee says police have a good indication of who the culprits are.
“There are limited people in this town who car-shop and we know who they are. The problem is getting them. If we get them in custody, we can put them in the room and start talking to them.”
An arrest was made in another theft reported in Creighton, which involved a person shoplifting from the Creighton Liquor Store. The assailants were caught on closed-circuit security tape and apprehended.
Assaults, break-ups
Breaking up is hard to do – but Sgt. McPhee said getting the police involved in the process for no reason isn’t the best move.
The Creighton sergeant told councillors that the RCMP has been dealing with an increased number of personal nuisance calls related to relationships gone south.
Charges of sending harassing communications, which McPhee described as sending “annoying text messages or Facebook messages,” were included.
“This comes in waves for us, we always end up getting involved in divorces and breakups. People try to drag the police into things, either for custody reasons or they think it will help in court somehow,” said Sgt. McPhee.
“It’s not what we do. Just break up and be grown-up about it.”
RCMP also responded to three assaults in November, one of which was domestic in nature.
“[The arrested man] was drunk and his mom was telling him to do something. He pushed her down and she smacked her head,” said McPhee.
“That was not the most chivalrous thing,” he added.
One assault complaint went unsolved after the person who had allegedly been assaulted said they had not been attacked and refused to give a statement.
“It’s still scored as an assault. Did it happen? We don’t know. We consider it unsolved,” said McPhee.
Liquor
Five liquor offenses were recorded, mostly consisting of public drunkenness and related charges. Creighton RCMP have a strict approach to liquor offences, with McPhee singling out one area establishment for criticism.
“The Hooter was a goldmine of drunks walking around the past little while, they are getting liquor tickets. We’re going to be having a discussion with the Hooter,” said Sgt. McPhee.
“We won’t let them take hold in Creighton like how they have on Main Street in Flin Flon,” he added, referring to the offenders.
