A marijuana retail location isn’t coming to Creighton soon, but Town Council isn’t ruling out the idea if an adequate business comes forward.

The provincial government has listed 40 different municipalities as eligible for marijuana retail sales, with 60 potential locations approved by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA). The list, which was released on Jan. 8, does not include Creighton, Denare Beach, Pelican Narrows, Sandy Bay or any communities within 400 kilometres of Creighton.

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) was listed as eligible for one marijuana location, but it is unclear if a pot shop will be opened on PBCN land or where in PBCN a marijuana store would be located.

Most locations on the released list have populations of 2,000 or more, meaning local communities were likely ruled out due to their smaller populations.

While the area was largely ignored in the first rollout of locations, Creighton Mayor Bruce Fidler has said a bid to open a private marijuana retail operation in Creighton would be seriously considered by council.

“Absolutely, we’d listen to it. We’d have to take it very seriously, but you never know,” he said.

Fidler mentioned that in the future Creighton or other smaller communities could apply to the provincial government for a license to open a marijuana retail location.

“If there is interest, you can put in a proposal to the government,” he said.

“If there’s enough interest from a smaller community, I’m sure there will be ways to put in applications or special requests or something like that.”
