Creighton inmate’s death prompts inquest

A public inquest will examine the death of a man who passed away following a seizure he suffered while in Creighton RCMP custody.

A public inquest will examine the death of a man who passed away following a seizure he suffered while in Creighton RCMP custody.

On the evening of August 25, 2013, Roderick Sewap was arrested in Denare Beach and taken to the Creighton RCMP detachment.

The following afternoon, Sewap, 43, had a seizure and was transported by ambulance to the Flin Flon General Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the Royal University Hospital where he died on August 31, 2013.

Saskatchewan law states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.

The Office of the Chief Coroner is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths in Saskatchewan. In addition to establishing who died, when and where the individual died, the medical cause of death and the manner of death, the coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Coroner Alma Wiebe, QC, of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest, which has been scheduled for October 20-24, starting at 10 am, at the Prospector Inn in Creighton.
