With about 130 students, the potential Creighton high school program might seem undersized to residents used to the larger setting of Hapnot Collegiate. But the high school wouldn't be small at all by provincial standards, according to Terry Brown, chairman of the Creighton School Board. "In Saskatchewan, that size of high school would be in the top 20 per cent," he told The Reminder this week. Brown said he wanted to set the record straight on this matter, commenting that a number of residents believe the "misconception" that the potential high school might simply be too small. The Creighton School Board will decide by January 15 whether to add grades 10, 11 and 12 to Creighton Community School. Their endorsement of the concept would allow the roughly 130 Creighton and Denare Beach students who attend high school in Flin Flon to do so closer to home. One question the matter has raised is this: What would happen if, after the high school program came into effect, a Creighton or Denare Beach student still wished to attend high school in Flin Flon? "Under the Education Act in Saskatchewan, they would have to attend the high school that is provided," answered Brown. "Only under extraordinary circumstances would applications be accepted (by the Creighton School Board) to go elsewhere."
