A new daycare centre will open in Creighton as early as September after a group of volunteers stepped forward to turn the concept into reality. The future of the proposal had hinged on a meeting held Tuesday evening at Creighton Community School. Without a sufficient turnout, organizers were prepared to scrap the idea and return a $50,000 contribution. The daycare was cemented when a group of 17 Creighton and Denare Beach residents, many of them willing to sit on the required board of directors, attended. In the coming weeks and months, that board will work out the specifics of the daycare, including location, staffing and the number of children who will be accepted. If a suitable existing location can be secured, the daycare will open as soon as September; if not, the board will consider having a new building constructed, delaying the opening for an unknown length of time. Bev McCrimmon, a volunteer involved with the project, said the high turnout Tuesday clearly shows there is demand for another daycare. She said KidsFirst North, a children's program based in Creighton, requires some daycare spots. There is also a need for a daycare for the children of Northlands College students, she said. McCrimmon added that having the centre in Creighton will allow Creighton and Denare Beach children who require after-school care to walk directly to the daycare. The daycare, which will feature up to 41 spots, will be open to children from Flin Flon as well.1/27/2005
