Creighton council report: work resuming after thaw

Work will soon begin on the final stretch of Creighton’s water and sewer replacement project.
Pipe repair

Work will soon begin on the final stretch of Creighton’s water and sewer replacement project.

Mayor Bruce Fidler announced at the May 9 meeting of Creighton town council that the contractor hired to finish the project will soon begin the last portions of work.

“They just started to move their equipment in and doing some preliminary work. They’re doing some work at the booster station right now,” said Fidler.

First announced in spring 2017, the project included replacing the water supply main from the town’s water treatment plant to the booster station near the Creighton Avenue-Main Street intersection and replacing pipes along Creighton Avenue.

The project was supposed to be fully finished by last fall, but was unfinished due to difficulties with bedrock blasting and inclement weather. Fidler said work should begin on the sites left unfinished on May 21.

Work is also underway on the Creighton water treatment plant. Pipe replacement within the plant itself was deemed to be the cause of a number of recent complaints about brown and discoloured water received by the town.

Water swabbing

The town is also beginning its seasonal water swabbing and hydrant flushing programs.

The work began on May 14, starting in west Creighton, specifically at King Street and Creighton Avenue west of Main Street. Work will continue at the town’s booster station as well.

“It’ll cover off the whole town eventually,” said Fidler.

“They do it every year.”

As a result of the work, the town warns some residents may experience lower water pressure or riled water due to flow changes. After the work is finished, residents are advised by the town to run their cold water to avoid any issues with supply.

Water line swabbing and flushing is usually done every year by the town, but was not done last summer due to the water and sewer replacement project.

Joint council

Creighton council could have a time conflict with the upcoming Community Futures Greenstone joint council meeting in Cranberry Portage.

The meeting, scheduled for May 23 at 5:30 pm, is the same night as a pre-scheduled town council meeting. Creighton council members are scheduled to meet 90 minutes after the joint council meeting begins.

“Unfortunately, we don’t know if everybody is going to be at this meeting. It might make the cut for us to free somebody up to go down there.”

No decision on whether or not a council member would go to the joint meeting was made during the town council meeting. Regional economic development coordinator Eve O’Leary will be present at the joint council meeting.

Funding

Creighton council passed and approved its annual budget at the May 9 meeting. Further details will be found in next week’s issue of The Reminder.

Council approved three funding measures during the meeting.

Council will pay Denare Beach-based company Dallen Industries $1,000 for summer maintenance and operation at the Creighton landfill.

“They look after the landfill, making sure that it’s Creighton residents coming in, cleaning up, pushing the dump, looking after all that stuff, scaring away bears,” said Fidler.

Council also approved making a donation of $5,000 to this summer’s Blueberry Jam Music Gathering in Flin Flon and donating $750 to Creighton Community School for their upcoming theatre production of The Love Bomb, a play with music that addresses social issues.
