The town of Creighton is keeping an open mind on the idea of holding a town hall meeting regarding the announced Hudbay closure.
“We’ve thought about it and we’ve talked about it a little bit. We’ve got to discuss it more. We’ve got to think about it some more. It’s not out of the question by any means,” said Creighton Mayor Bruce Fidler at council’s March 13 meeting.
“We’re not against it, that’s for sure.”
At a recent Flin Flon city council meeting, councillors said they would welcome such a meeting.
RCMP
Creighton RCMP Sgt. Sean McPhee presented the detachment’s monthly report at the meeting. McPhee provided an update on a suspicious persons case that included someone locking themselves in their car to avoid someone who had allegedly followed them to their house.
McPhee said the person wanted in that case has been found, but the situation has proved to be less black-and-white as originally thought.
“It turns out, it wasn’t a criminal thing. It was more of a mental health thing. The person responsible had just moved to town weeks prior to access doctors for anxiety and panic attacks,” he said.
“He’d gone outside, thought his lungs were going to freeze and he panicked and was trying to get into a warm space. We had a meeting with the two families to make sure everything was understood. I think they’re quite pleased with the result of it.”
McPhee said the situation was not violent in nature and no attempt to steal a vehicle or otherwise attack anyone was made.
“It wasn’t a carjacking, which makes me very happy. Those kinds of things, we don’t want any part of that,” he said.
In other detachment details, McPhee said Creighton RCMP curfew checks are declining because fewer habitual offenders are still in the Creighton area.
“Most of the guys (habitual offenders) are gone, relocated, in jail or their curfews are finished. The numbers are getting lower. That’s a positive thing,” he said.
Bus shelter
Ongoing discussions for a school bus shelter in south Creighton have not yet been approved by a town subcommittee, but plans for the project are advancing.
Construction of the project would be done by woodshop students at Creighton Community School. Councillors said the town is awaiting materials and drawings from the school and hope to have a structure built on the site by the end of the school year at the earliest.
“I think the plan is to do it before the school year is done,” said Creighton administrative assistant Cindy Davis.
“It’s not that big of a project. It’s not that big of a shelter, size-wise,” said Fidler.
Cash
The town spent money on four separate measures at their most recent meeting, headlined by a five-figure payment for the Creighton Community Centre.
Council approved paying a $10,000 annual operating grant for the centre, which receives an annual payment from the town for building upkeep and maintenance.
Fidler also approved several smaller spending measures, including purchases of a half-page ad in the Creighton Community School yearbook, a donation to the upcoming Flin Flon Curling Club mixed bonspiel and another donation to the Creighton Community School “Let’s Read” program.
Council signed off on closing Green Street near the Creighton ball diamond for Canada Day celebrations this summer and issued a tax abatement for the property on 515 Broderick Avenue. A fire on the property destroyed a house last month.
The town also gave an approximate time for the release of the upcoming town budget, saying it should be released by the end of April.
