The first annual Cranberry Portage Challenge and Heritage Festival made for two fun-filled days on July 1st and 2nd on the shores of Athapap Lake. Thursday began with a pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall followed by a Canada Day parade. After the opening ceremonies on the grounds near Athapap Lake, an Art Pavilion was available for those interested, and family fun events were held including face painting, a fish pond, bean bag toss, bingo, soccer and a family scavenger hunt. The events were enjoyed by young and old alike. An exhibition of the Portage Challenge and the Voyageur Survivor Challenge races took place. The evening found people dancing in the street as the Family Street Dance was held with music supplied by Amisk Music. Friday again found several people out for a pancake breakfast and the registration for both the Portage and Survivor Challenges. See 'Festival' P.# Con't from P.# The Roger Carriere Portage Challenge had four teams of two people sign up. One team consisted of all male, one all female, and two teams were mixed. The Voyageur Survivor Challenge had five teams sign up. This relay event had each of the five team members working hard to be the first to make the finish line. The awarding of prizes for the events followed with prize moneys coming from the proceeds of the silent art auction and entry fees. The two committees planning this first time event have worked hard and deserve much graditude for all they accomplished. They plan to meet soon and look at what they can do to make this event happen again next summer. Contact your committee members if you have any suggestions or perhaps offer your services to help them make this an annual reality. Watch for a story and pictures on this Cranberry Portage event in the next edition of Cottge North magazine.
