The Department of Social Development has announced that Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) benefit rates will be increased as of January 1, 2004. Canadians already receiving CPP benefits as of December 2003 will get an increase of 3.2 percent. Canada Pension Plan benefits are adjusted once a year, in January, based on changes over a 12-month period in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Canadians receiving OAS benefits will also get an increase as of January 1, 2004. The basic OAS pension, paid to people 65 years of age and over, will be $462.47 per month. This is an increase of 0.2 percent over the rate for the previous three months.
