MTS crews will work to provide better coverage of high-speed Internet services throughout Flin Flon. Over the next few weeks, workers will undertake a process called "loop-grooming," which attempts to weed out inconsistencies in the DSL service. "Sometimes you'll run into a situation where your neighbours could get the service but you could not due to certain barriers on the DSL line that keeps the service from getting to a home," explained spokesperson Michelle Picard from her Winnipeg office. "We're making it so more people in those areas can access DSL if they have been denied it due to having these barriers on their lines." Picard noted that MTS will be conducting loop-grooming across the province. MTS launched DSL, which provides significantly faster downloads then dial-up, in Flin Flon to much fanfare on July 29, 2001. Some downloads that once took as long as 20 minutes now took 90 seconds or less. Other than the enhanced speed, subscribers to DSL Ñ Digital Subscriber Line Ñ are able to simultaneously use a single phone line for Internet surfing and phone calls. This is made possible by the fact DSL utilizes a higher frequency on a phone line than its dial-up counterpart. DSL also provides subscribers with a constant link to the Web, so they no longer having to worry about busy signals.
