Jonathon Naylor Editor A year ago they would have had a brand new car, but Garry and Grace Goodman certainly aren't complaining about winning the Flin Flon Lions Club's summer raffle. The local couple is $8,240 richer after a ticket with their names on it was drawn from 823 others in the club's 50/50 fundraising draw. Garry said he planned to send some of the money to his wife, who is visiting family in the U.S., so their daughter may see Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The 50/50 draw, which this year replaced the Lions' usual summer draw for a new vehicle, sold almost half of the 2,000 tickets printed. But Monica Lone, draw chairperson, was by no means disappointed. 'I think that it is what it is,' she said. 'We didn't have a lot of club members available to sell tickets. We did the best we could. I think the difficulty is getting it through to the community; they're accustomed to seeing something visual.' Less risk Lone said the club switched from a vehicle to a 50/50 format to lessen the risk involved. 'Traditionally our summer draws have been much more difficult to sell enough tickets, so there's always the worry _Êwill we sell enough tickets to pay for the vehicle?' she said. 'The club made the decision back in January that they did not want to do another vehicle in the summer because of the risk. So we didn't have anything planned for a while and then we talked about doing a monster 50/50, which the club decided it would do.' Had all tickets been sold, the 50/50 draw would have offered a prize of $20,000. The cheese-coloured tickets sold for $20 each. Proceeds will benefit projects within the community. The draw was held at Pioneer Square at 3 p.m. sharp this past Monday, Aug. 6. Anne Goodman, who was on hand to watch the draw, pulled the winning ticket from the wire-bordered barrel. Lone does not know whether the vehicle draw will return next summer. 'It all depends on what the club decides to do,' she said.
