Jonathon Naylor Editor As a Flin Flon city councillor and former director with a provincial lobbying group, Karen MacKinnon has been a voice for northern Manitoba. And that will continue to be part of her role now that she has been appointed to the board of directors of Manitoba Public Insurance. 'I'm looking forward to representing the North and the province,' says MacKinnon, who was named to the board last month and attended her first meeting this past Friday. MacKinnon is one of 10 members _ and the lone northerner _ on the board that oversees the Winnipeg-based public auto insurer. She was nominated for the three-year term by Flin Flon MLA Clarence Pettersen, who was thrilled that the government caucus approved her selection. 'Strong voice' 'I think anytime Karen puts her mind to whatever she's doing, she's going to do the best she can,' Pettersen says, 'and being a northerner she knows we need a strong voice, and that's one of the reasons I nominated her is because she has a strong voice caring about the North.' MacKinnon attended an orientation for her new position last month and gained a whole new respect for MPI. 'Very impressive' 'It's a very impressive organization,' she says. 'Compared to what other provinces have, MPI is top notch.' MacKinnon has been on city council since October 2006. From 2008 to 2011, she was the northern rep on the board of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, an influential lobbying group. MacKinnon expects her experience with AMM will help her in her role with MPI. The last northern MPI board member was out of Thompson.
