Creighton town council will again consider improvements to the timeworn surface of the Creighton football / soccer field.

At their Wednesday, Sept. 23 meeting, council referred the matter to the committee level for discussion.

Creighton Community School, home of the Creighton Kodiaks football team, is requesting the field be re-seeded or re-sodded.

“Over the past couple of years the football / soccer field in Creighton has seen an increase in usage, during both the football and soccer seasons,” community school coordinator Carol Sutherland wrote in a letter to council. “The increased usage has resulted in divots and mounds on the playing area, which are hazardous to players and officials.”

She wrote that Kodiaks members are willing to help look after the field following any improvements.

“Improvements to the field will add value to the facility, as well as increase the opportunities for our community to host larger tournaments [and/or] sporting events,” added Sutherland.

Town council obtained a quote for field improvements over the summer but determined the price was too high, noted town administrator Paula Muench.

Council’s committee of the whole will now reexamine the matter.

Aid agreement

Council approved a motion to add the SaskAlert program to the Town of Creighton’s mutual-aid agreement with the Northern Village of Denare Beach.

If an emergency is impacting residents in both communities, Creighton “would have access to do alerts combining information for both communities,” the motion read.

SaskAlert is a public-alerting program that gives municipalities the authority to issue warnings in the event of emergencies such as forest fires or flooding.

A local test alert was broadcast on CFAR last month. Advisories can be broadcast on radio, TV and on the SaskAlert website.

Concession tender

Council reviewed the terms of tender for the Creighton Sportex concession booth – a tender that has since gone to local resident Vi Coe.

The tender requires Coe to operate the concession at least one hour prior to, during, and until all customers have left the arena after, scheduled events.

Other terms include hiring staff with food-handler training, providing “a good variety of food and drinks,” and ensuring the concession is clear of stock by April 30, 2016.

At the time of the meeting, council did not know who would receive the tender. Muench later said Coe would be chosen as the lone bidder.

Meanwhile, staff this week began flooding the rink portion of the Sportex arena ahead of hockey and skating season.

The ice surface is expected to be ready for public use by mid-October. Minor, rec league and old-timer hockey will utilize the ice, as will skating programs.

Project updates

Council reviewed an update on municipal projects scheduled for 2015.

Time pending, a fire hydrant will be added to Elander Avenue this fall and two leaky hydrants will be replaced.

Work is ongoing to replace culverts on Nejedly Street, Fourth Avenue, Old Creighton Avenue and Bereskin Avenue.

Drainage upgrades for the Sportex parking lot have been rescheduled for 2016. Drainage issues were first identified in 2012 when the town was considering paving the arena’s parking lot.

Honourees sought

Town council is looking for the public’s help in choosing Creighton’s top volunteers.

Council has been asked to select three residents to accept volunteer awards at the upcoming Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce Communities Gala 2015.

The gala will be held Thursday, Oct. 15 at the RH Channing Auditorium to recognize outstanding volunteers and businesses in the Flin Flon-Creighton area.

Muench invited anyone with suggestions for Creighton’s volunteer award recipients to contact the town office at
306-688-8253. Past recipients are not eligible.
