Flin Flon City Council wants to know the future plans for the old armoury before giving consideration to a sidewalk leading to the facility. Earlier this year, the Flin Flon School Division, concerned for students' safety, requested the City build a sidewalk along the south shoulder of Highway 10A near the building, now home to Many Faces Education Centre. "We weren't necessarily hesitant with regards to the cost of the sidewalk," said Coun. Cal Huntley at Tuesday's council meeting. "We asked for some clarification along the intentions for that building in the future, if we were going to invest some money, and they (the school division) weren't willing to commit to any kind of a time frame with regards to how long that facility will continue in use." The high traffic volume on Highway 10A is a concern to the school division given that there is no crosswalk in front of the entrance to Many Faces. Though students can utilize a nearby pedestrian-controlled crosswalk, they must still walk along the south shoulder of the highway to get to class ? a sometimes arduous task in the wintertime. It's easier for students to walk along the opposite shoulder, which does feature a sidewalk, and cross at the entrance to the school parking lot. In a letter reviewed Tuesday by council, the school division requested that a crosswalk be painted to the parking lot as an alternative to the sidewalk. But that idea didn't sit well with Coun. Huntley, either. "It's so close to another controlled crosswalk that it really would make traffic very unmanageable there," he said. Coun. Huntley suggested that there might be "an interim solution" in which the south shoulder is kept clear, allowing students to more easily access the existing crosswalk. Council referred the school division's letter to the Engineering Services Committee for further review. Council will attend the Association of Manitoba Municipalities convention in Winnipeg, an event that includes meetings between local government representatives and cabinet ministers. The councillors mentioned a few ideas they want to bring up, including potential provincial funding for the proposed seniors housing complex at Rotary Court, and water treatment and quality. "The other one would be, of course, continuing to lobby, given the age of our recreational facilities, for some form of funding to support the Communityplex," said Coun. Huntley of the proposed recreational complex to be built at the Phantom Lake Golf Course. Here is a recap of other matters from the meeting: Coun. Dave Kennedy noted that crews have been surveying the main route through Flin Flon in preparation for next summer's repaving project. The province plans to repave the route next summer. The route, which runs from the Gas Bar to the Saskatchewan border at the end of Main St., is a provincial roadway. Council donated $100 to CADAC for the upcoming First Night Out, a chemical-free New Year's Eve celebration at the R.H. Channing Auditorium. With the weather turning the roads slippery, Coun. Huntley encouraged motorists to drive with added caution. Council reviewed a letter from the Manitoba Emergency Assistance Association Inc., offering to again help police patrol the community on Halloween. The councillors referred the letter to the Committee of the Whole for further discussion.
