The City may soon get started on a plan to overhaul, or potentially expand, the Flin Flon landfill.

Council approved a measure approving the City’s effort to apply for grant funds on a plan to possibly overhaul the site during a city council meeting earlier this month. The measure, which passed unanimously, gave council’s approval for what the City describes as the “landfill site investigation, remedial action plan and landfill master plan”. The City issued a request for proposals for creating the plan in November.

That plan will include an application to the Building Sustainable Communities program. That program, a provincial government granting program administered by Recreation Manitoba, covers partial project costs for non-profits, charities and communities for planning sustainable projects. The program covers 50 per cent of costs for most projects up to $75,000, or up to $300,000 for what are deemed “large capital projects”.

“A planning project is one that focuses on the development of a plan that helps communities or regions to make decisions about priorities for future development,” reads the official grant website.

“This would include land use and development plans, economic development plans, community development plans, strategic plans and recreation master plans.”

Any planning work would be overseen by the City’s public works department and City works and operations director Adem Adebayo, one of the director’s first major new projects since being hired by the City last fall.

“What's happening is both of those grant applications are really just assessments of where we're at and what we might need in the future,” said City interim chief administrative officer Lyn Brown.
