Jonathon Naylor Editor As life marches on, it is easy to forget what it was like to be young. That is now less of a problem for Flin Flon City Council, which last week welcomed new youth representative Alexandrea Oliver. "I do like to know what's going on with my community," said Oliver, a grade 10/11 student at Hapnot Collegiate. Though she lacks voting power, Oliver will attend meetings with council until June, offering her input on a broad spectrum of municipal matters. Mayor George Fontaine said both council and Oliver stand to gain a lot from her presence. 'Looking forward' "We're looking forward to working with her," he said. While most teens are bored to tears by all things political, Oliver was intrigued by her first meeting. "It's quite interesting to see how it's done and to experience it firsthand," she said. Born in Winnipeg, Oliver later moved to Sherridon and then Flin Flon. At Hapnot, she eagerly joined the student council. After high school, she plans to remain in the area and work for Manitoba Hydro, though she is not sure in which capacity. The youth representative position is coordinated through Hapnot Student Council, which since 2001 has sent an interested student to council meetings.
