City council cracked open the municipal wallet Tuesday to boost support for recycling, replace heavy equipment and ring in Canada Day with a bang. Council voted to raise its annual per-capita grant to the Flin Flon Recycling Centre from $9.85 to $11.40 per resident. 'I just think we're really lucky to have this hardworking, dedicated group that is on the board of the Flin Flon and District Environment Council,' said Coun. Skip Martin, referring to the not-for-profit organization that oversees the Recycling Centre. Without those volunteers, he said, 'we wouldn't have a recycling program, I don't think, and we sure wouldn't have it for what it's costing us today.' 'It's very cost-efficient,' Coun. Martin said. Coun. Martin said the value of the Recycling Centre has been recognized by the Town of Creighton, which has already agreed to up its per-capita grant to $11.40. 'It's a great example of a regional facility that both towns are benefitting from and both towns are contributing to the operation of the facility,' he said. 'And someday it would be nice if we get to the point where all the regional facilities are paid for by all the people in the region, and I think this is a good example of how it can be done.' Under the old per-capita amount of $9.85, Flin Flon was doling out $55,081 to the recycling program each year, based on the 5,592 residents of the Manitoba and Saskatchewan portions of the community. Raising grant By raising the grant, the city will now pay $63,749 _ a raise of $8,668, or about 16 per cent. Also Tuesday, council voted to spend $133,500, excluding taxes, on a 2012 loader vehicle manufactured by Volvo. The funds will come from the city's reserve fund for new equipment. A further $1,000 went as a donation to the Flin Flon Fireworks Committee for the fireworks show planned for midnight on Canada Day. Council also voted to spend $500 on a full-page ad in the upcoming Flin Flon Service Guide publication published by The Reminder. Another $100 was allotted for two banner ads in the 2012-13 Hapnot Collegiate yearbook.
