The Manitoba government is scouring the map for land for the 1,000 new cottage lots it promised in the 2002 throne speech. Manitoba Conservation Minister Stan Struthers told reporters that the lots are still a priority, but added he does not yet have a short list of potential sites. "We're looking across the province," he told the Winnipeg Free Press. "It's an important project we have to do right." The demand for cottage lots is widely believed to be outpacing the supply across the province, and rumours are swarming about the whereabouts of potential lot sites. Recently, the government came under pressure from the Coalition of Manitoba Cottagers in Provincial Parks to tell Manitobans where the lots will be located.
