Coordinator calls it a career

A familiar face at Flin Flon City Hall has bid farewell.

Moira Davis, the city’s long-time utilities and taxation coordinator, capped off a 27-year career with the municipality yesterday.

During a come-and-go retirement party in council chambers on Wednesday, Davis reflected on how much she has enjoyed working with her colleagues over the years.

She also made note of how greatly technology altered her job, with photocopiers and computers succeeding carbon paper and the Gestetner machine.

Originally from Montreal, Davis moved west to study at the University of Winnipeg, where she double majored in economics and administrative studies.

She also met a Flin Flon area native named Duane Davis, whom she eventually married. In 1981, after graduation, the couple moved to Duane’s home community for what was supposed to be a year.

That short-term plan changed as the North grew on the Davises.

In 1982-83, when city hall was still on Main Street, Moira began a six-month stint for the municipality as executive secretary to the chief administrative officer.

In mid-1987, she returned to city hall to cover a sick leave in the utilities and taxation department. A few months later, she became a permanent member of the staff.

Over the years Moira has done work for recreation and cemeteries, but utilities and taxation have been her main focus.

In retirement, Moira looks forward to visiting her daughter in Calgary and is all set for a Fleetwood Mac concert later this fall.

In the long term, she says she and Duane, who still has two more years before retirement, are open to all possibilities.

The city has yet to name Moira’s replacement but hopes to have someone in place soon.
