Excerpts from the Manitoba government's latest Labour Market Monitor for the northern region, released last month: In The Pas, the Michif Child and Family Services Agency has hired 20 people to work at its new head office. Since forming in 2011, Michif has opened offices or shelters in Dauphin, Swan River and Thompson, with each site employing about 33 people. The agency plans to recruit three more staff but has encountered challenges recruiting qualified social workers. Also in The Pas, construction of a new library and a child-care facility, totaling $15 million, is underway on the University College of the North campus. Although exact job creation numbers are unknown, PCL Constructors Inc. has been recruiting local contractors and construction labourers to work on the project. Once complete, these facilities are expected to generate many job opportunities in administrative, library and child-care services. In Thompson, the Extra Foods store is closing June 23, resulting in the loss of approximately 38 jobs. According to parent company Loblaw, the store is no longer economically viable. Thompson has lost a significant number of retail jobs since Staples, Rogers Plus and Blockbuster closed last year. Also in Thompson, the new Best Western Thompson Hotel and Suites has opened and is recruiting. The hotel expects to employ 25 people once fully staffed. In Berens River, a new $5-million renal treatment facility has opened, successfully recruiting two registered nurses and one health care aide. The Berens River Renal Health Centre expects to hire more staff depending on the volume of patients this year.
