A crowded Hapnot Collegiate gymnasium was treated to an early Christmas gift Monday courtesy of the high school's band and choir students. About 300 people turned out for the Hapnot Christmas Concert, a two-hour showcase of young musical talent. "I felt that the kids were able to actually communicate the music," commented music teacher Lisa Aune. "They were sensitive to the music; they weren't just playing the notes." The evening included performances from the grade 9 band, the intermediate and senior jazz bands, the senior concert band and the school choir. About 100 students were involved. A number of pieces suited the holiday season and clearly elevated the Christmas spirit throughout the audience. A highlight came when Japanese exchange student Mitsuru Iida sang a Japanese pop tune accompanied by local musician Mark Kolt and three students. The high school students began rehearsing for the concert in September, and it showed in their mastery of the music. Residents will again be treated to young musical talent tonight when the junior high band concert takes place at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac beginning at 7 p.m. In other news, grade 8-12 band and choir students plan to attend a music festival in Edmonton this April.
