The biggest winter events in Flin Flon and Creighton will merge into one mega-gathering this February. The Bust the Winter Blues festival will be the combination of Flin Flon's Sled Dog Races and Winter Events Festival and Creighton's Chilly Willy Winter Festival. "It's something new we're going to try and we feel it will be successful," said Aimee Deans, recreation programmer for the City of Flin Flon. Teaming up to put on the new festival are staff from Flin Flon Parks and Recreation, Creighton Recreation and the Flin Flon Indian-Metis Friendship Centre. "We thought if we brainstormed together, it would be better than doing so individually," commented Deans. Talks of the two festivals combining have been ongoing for months and finally cumulated at the beginning of October. "We finally have come together to do this," said Deans. Deans said a reason for the decision was that organizers of the festivals did not want to "burn out" their volunteers. She also said they felt it would be fairer to local businesses if they were asked to sponsor one festival rather than two. The Bust the Winter Blues festival, scheduled for February 13-15, will include popular aspects of both former festivals as well as plenty of new activities for families to enjoy. That will include a one-day sled dog race on Ross Lake, pancake breakfasts, a snowboarding competition and a flea market. New events will include a MuchMusic dance, a social for adults and other "new and exciting things" that Deans will disclose as the festival approaches. Events will take place in both Flin Flon and Creighton. The committee for the new festival consists of Deans and Heather Todoschuk from Flin Flon Parks and Recreation; Cindy Davis from Creighton Recreation; and Jason Mandes from the Flin Flon Indian-Metis Friendship Centre. Anyone wishing to help out with the festival, or who has suggestions for events, may contact Aimee at 681-7542, Cindy at 688-8254 or Jason at 687-8855.
