A lower-than-hoped-for meeting turnout has pushed back elections for the committee that will oversee the potential Flin Flon Aqua Centre redevelopment.

With only nine people in attendance at city hall last Wednesday, May 27, city recreation manager Mike Dubreuil decided to reschedule nominations and the election until at least the June meeting.

The handful of area residents who did attend held an open-floor style meeting, with Dubreuil facilitating, to answer any questions or concerns.

Dubreuil addressed matters around fundraising with the Canada 150 Fund, which will help celebrate the nation’s 150th birthday in 2017. The federal fund will support community infrastructure projects across the country.

Currently, Dubreuil says only small grant amounts will be awarded through the Canada 150 Fund – around the $500,000 mark – but he has heard rumblings that larger amounts could be announced later on.

The Aqua Centre project received a donation of $540 from Mabel Wall, who presented the money to Dubreuil on behalf of the late Charlene Logan from her pool buddies.

Committee

Once a committee has been formed the executive will discuss the future of the Aqua Centre, including fundraising, grant applications and the overall layout of the facility.

Of six options for the building presented over the past year, options 4 and 5 continue to be popular in the community, though the final decision will be made by city council.

The next Aqua Centre meeting has not yet been scheduled, though Dubreuil hinted it would be toward the end of June – before camping and holiday season kicks into high gear.

Dubreuil encourages all residents – from Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach and surrounding areas – to attend the upcoming executive selection meeting.

He says having representation from other communities brings the opportunity for partnerships.
